What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the third largest primary health care profession in the world. It is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and their affect on the body. The spine is of central importance. The nuromusculoskeletal system is the nerves, muscles and joints of the body.
What do Chiropractors Treat?
Chiropractors treat a wide variety of injuries and complaints including:
Acute and Chronic Lower Back Pain Acute and Chronic Neck Pain
Migraine Headaches Cervicogenic Headaches
Sciatica Cervicogenic Dizziness
Hip and Shoulder Pain Knee Conditions
Arm and Leg injuries.
What happens on my first visit?
You will have a full medical history of you injury / complaint as well as a general medical history including any medication you are on.
Then you will have a thorough physical examination using a wide range of examination procedures to skilfully diagnose your problem including:
Orthopaedic Neurological Chiropactic
Postural Cardiovascular Abdominal testing.
You may be X-rayed depending on the history and examination findings. This may be because of trauma, suspicion of arthritis or pathology or spinal distortions such as scoliosis.
Once a diagnosis has been reached you will then be presented with a full explanation of your complaint and your treatment and you may ask any questions that you may have.
A unique treatment plan will then be devised to personally suit you and your complaint and you wil receive your first treatment.
Chiropractic treatment mainly consists of manipulation of the joints of the body to improve movement of the joints and decrease muscular tension and inflammation.
Often an audible "crack" or cavitation can be heard. This is merely a bubble of gas popping in the joint that has been stretched open and is a normal side effect of the treatment.
Treatment does not usually hurt but some after treatment soreness can be experienced especially if the joints are inflamed. This will settle quickly in most cases.
Chiropractors use a range of different treatments that are modified for each patient. They include joint manipulation, mobilisation, massage, soft tissue treatments, ultrasound therapy and rehabilitative exercise programmes.
Chiropractic has always presented itself as a safe, natural and conservative source of care, offering an alternative to medication and surgery for a wide range of the population.
Case Study - Six Week Old Baby Girl
A mother contacted Dr Bateman about her six week old baby girl. She had gone one week over term during her pregnancy, she had been induced and went through a prolonged labour.
After the birth she reported that her baby girl spent hours every night crying until she was hoarse and drawing up her knees, also that she took a long time to settle but during the day she seemed to be generally fine.
When an examination was performed on the baby girl they found restrictions on her upper cervical and upper and mid thoracic. No other abnormalities were detected and her development was seen as normal.
After her first treatment with Dr Bateman the mother reported that her daughter settled better but was still upset for a time. After her second treatment the baby girl settled very quickly and slept extremely well. The mother also reported that there was no prolonged crying at all. Since the second consultation there has been no further treatment necessary.
